Installing Mend for Visual Studio

This topic describes how to install the Semmle Mend for Visual Studio extensions.

Prerequisites

Before you can install and configure Semmle Mend for Visual Studio, you need:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2013, 2015 or 2017.
  • A Semmle Mend for Visual Studio installer, available from the private wiki (customer login required).

Important

Semmle Mend for Visual Studio supports the download of alerts from Project Insight. A separate extension providing integration with LGTM Enterprise is available. For more information, contact your LGTM administrator (within your organization).

Installing an extension

Semmle Mend for Visual Studio is installed by running a standard VSIX installer.

To install Mend for Visual Studio
  1. Download the required install files from the private wiki (customer login required). The available files are:
    • semmle-mend-vs-dashboard-X.X.X.vsix—required for download analysis.
    • semmle-mend-vs-local-X.X.X.vsix—required for local analysis for C/C++, C# and download analysis.
  2. Ensure Visual Studio is closed.
  3. Double-click on the Semmle Mend for Visual Studio installer (where X.X.X is the version number) that you want to install. This is / these are the file(s) downloaded in step 1:
    • semmle-mend-vs-dashboard-X.X.X.vsix or
    • semmle-mend-vs-local-X.X.X.vsix
  4. In the VSIX Installer dialog box, a list of all compatible versions of Visual Studio identified on the computer is displayed.
  5. Review the versions of Visual Studio displayed and select all the applications that you want to extend to include Mend.
  6. Click Install to start the installation.
  7. On completion the dialog box is updated to show the result of the installation.

When you next start Visual Studio, Semmle Mend for Visual Studio is ready to be configured to show results from one of the following:

  • A Project Insight dashboard
  • Locally performed analysis of C/C++ and C# projects
